Disability Athletics

On Sunday 8th March 2015 we have Jenny Archer visiting us for a wheelchair coaching session from 11am until 1pm, all those interested are welcome to attend!

We pride ourselves as being an all inclusive athletic club and where possible integrate athletes of all abilities into our regular coaching groups. We have athletes that have represented Great Britain at the 2012 Paralympics including medalists.

Where logistical constraints mean we have to make special provision we do so, seated throws being one such example.
We also launched a wheelchair group in September 2014. It’s early days yet but with several very promising athletes and dedicated coaches the prospects look very good.

The Wheelchair group and seated throws group meet Tuesdays between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m.

We also have strong links with the Special Olympics squad which meets on Monday evenings.

For any issues concerning disabled sports; coaching, competition contact Bron Carter 07958243579.

The following is Bron’s profile given to the English Federation of Disability Sports;

I coach all pupils with a disability in mainstream and special schools and get them to enter competitions and an opportunity to take part in sport. When I started only 20 took part and now we have 120 entering competitions.

I also am a level 4 throws coach for Portsmouth Athletic club and SE regional disability officer. I ran the squads and helped set up competitions for all.

I also went as a throws coach to Beijing Paralympics and have been a GB coach for 10 years.

I also am a world weightlifting champion and European Champion 10 times.

I have recently been awarded an honary degree from the University of Portsmouth and awarded coach of the year in The News Sports Awards

How / when started?

I got started as an athlete and noticed that there were very few coaches willing to help the throws I after being told that I was too short to be successful threw the shot very well and got a home international . England Athletics then asked me to Coach English squads for competitions nationally and eventually international. I have had five international athletes and one was European champion and record holder. I then started coaching dwarfs and had a great success at that so Disability Athletics took off. I got involved with the DSE and found even more athletes who need help.

Here I am still lifting and coaching weights and coaching athletes who want to be successful. I have a potential Commonwealth games javelin thrower and two dwarf throwers hoping to be internationals.
