The City of Portsmouth AC Club of the Year (Come on Portsmouth!!!!)
Posted by Nobody on 26 August 2016
After Discussions between Myself, Paul Farres, Phil Budd, Paul Smith and Andrew Vincent the club sent an entry for this years Prestigious Club of the Year Awards. Iam glad to say we have won the S.E Region and we will now move forward to The National Finals.
Big Thanks has to go to Paul Farres who wrote the entry in 250 words and I know every word meant a lot him and all the Athletes/Volunteers that make this club special.
The club has excelled across many facets of athletic activity. Membership is from a large geographical area in addition to the local community base in the urban conurbation of Portsmouth. In the YDL lower, there have been 4 successive promotion years, at present leading the premier 2. Last weekend the Hampshire county schools track and field team contained 25 club athletes compared with only 3 in 2011. In cross country last winter the club provided both, county, and national champions, leading to International selection for some club members. The senior men maintained their BAL status in the clubs first ever season in this league. Additionally a number of representatives competed successfully in European masters championships. Many athletes have top 15 status in their events and respective ages, the club being particularly proud of the successes in girls throwing events. The club has always embraced disability athletics; Olivia Breen started her athletic life with us and is still a proud club member, our newly formed wheel chair section is showing success, young Craig Broadman winning a series of road races. Our Satellite Clubs, based in local state schools (Cams, Porchester) have been the life blood of the club, incredibly in recent years providing 6 National age group champions (2 last year). Community based project (Start track) in conjunction with Portsmouth schools has also played its part and providing county and National medallists last year. Membership has increased year on year, the future of athletics in our community is in safe hands.
