As the Goodwood relays are not high priority for the club it was good to see so many scratch teams competing for the club, the fact that two u15 girls and u17 men won team medals is a bonus.

As expected our u15 girls were the star performers finishing in 5th place. It is a mark of how high the girls expectations are in that they were disappointed with this result, given that two of the three girls will be in the same age group next year I think this was an excellent result.
Our u13 girls in finishing 12th also showed tremendous potential the vast majority of the team are bottom year athletes, and some are running faster than some of our better u15 girls.
As has been the pattern over the years at this younger age group the girls are more numerous than boys and more willing to compete. We had a number of late withdrawals through illness and these were predominantly boys.
A note on the SEAA road relays.
Compared with the AFD organised events of previous years this was verging on the chaotic, there were no change over pens and given that it was a motor racing circuit the changeover point was hemmed in by crash barriers so athletes had to press up against the barriers until number called needless to say there were missed calls, crashes and officials getting in the way. Initially the athletes were asked to ‘tag’ one another at the changeover, this was quickly abandoned after several crashes.
There was no results service, so individual times were not available.
The toilet arrangements also need addressing, they were perhaps a quarter mile from the start line, and of course there were not enough with the inevitable long ques.
It was an extremely open course and the wind was a serious factor especially for the smaller, lighter runners. By way of example our u13 girls were only placed 23rd in the SEAA race compared with 12th in the Nationals.
Our major success was in Lachlan Wellington achieving fastest u17 runner. The u17 mns team were also our best place team, 5th.
We had no senior teams.
Wessex cross country league.
As usual this league offers the opportunity for athletes to participate in a relatively low key event, but with reasonable competition. It was until recently the only chance our u11s had to run cross country. The Hampshire League now has u11s at discretion of host club. The first match was on 11th October, the day after the nationals so was not expecting great numbers to attend, in all there were 7 competitors from the club. The best place being Callum Crook 2nd in u15boys.
