Hampshire Cross Country League, Farley Mount, Report

Hampshire Cross country League. Match 1 Farley Mount, 15th October.
Good to see full teams out for all age groups and both sexes, long may that continue. All in all it was an encouraging start.
As I compiled this it was a sobering thought that through the age groups the numbers competing dramatically decline, not so much our club, but in general, the number of finishers from u13, through 15 to 17 ran for males; 91, 59, 36 and for women 71, 69, 41. A steep decline and one that has been of concern for many years in all sports.
Senior Men
For many years we have not been a force to recon with over the cross country despite having some exceptional individuals. Even now with a full complement out we’d be reasonably placed in div 1, let alone top div 2 as we are by a wide margin. Some of our best performers are away at university and we have a few new faces in the process of joining, so with a consistent turn out we should comfortably regain our div 1 position.

It was good to be able to field a full team for this fixture, let’s hope we can maintain this through the season as we will comfortably make the top half of the table and improve on our present 7th place.

One of our strongest teams, sit in joint top spot with AFD. Lachlan Wellington once again showed his dominance finishing 15 secs ahead of the second place runner. As always an excellent run from Jacob O’Hara and an ever improving Steven Cross filled the team scoring positions.

U17 Women
With just 3 athletes we made a very creditable return of 5th place, with excellent runs from Anya Pigden and Eleanor Purdue separated by just 2 seconds and backed up by a solid run from Katie Simister. A top three finish is not beyond this team.

With injuries taking their toll the u15 boys result looks underwhelming, but this will certainly improve over subsequent fixtures.

U15 girls.
Our strongest team result of the day with a clear first place. Considering Ellie Farrow’s 1st place position couldn’t count towards the team result, and Nicole Ainsworth, one of our national cross country champions having to pull out through illness, and Olivia Wiseman and Charlotte Bullard running in Sussex league, their home county, and recording 1st and 8th place respectively this was an exceptional performance, illustrating the depth of talent the club has at this level.
Saffron Moore produced her usual quality performance, newcomer Matilda Atkins producing an excellent run for 9th place, and ever dependable Bo Sansom securing the scoring positions for the team.

U13 boys
Another team hit hard by injuries and the result doesn’t reflect the true potential of this age group. And dare I say it this is the age group where team sports like football take their toll, but it must be the same for all clubs.

U13 girls.
Great potential from this group of young ladies, finishing 4th on the day but with the top four teams clearly dominating the day it should be a highly competitive season. Good run from ‘old hands’ Ellie O’Neill and Isabelle Brydon, backed up by most of last years under 11 county champion team, (Olivia East, Hattie Locke, Bella Digby) and some promising debuts from newcomers, Natalya Smith, Emily Corker and Milly Lainge. Jess Smith is making progress after an injury and will certainly improve as the season progresses.
