What a good year for our Throwers.

It can’t have escaped anyone’s attention that follows the clubs progress that we currently have some of the most amazing throwers the club has ever had, indeed any club has ever had. Heather Cubbage’s recent exploits with the discus are truly remarkable, and with luck, hard work and good advice she can ‘possibly’ take her competitive career wherever she wants. I’ve been around athletics too long to predict the future and a cautious ‘possible’ is all I’d venture at this point, but what a foundation to build on.

Heather rightly has the limelight to herself at the moment, just a month back, Gaia Osborne and Serena Vincent stole the show by being selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games team, both have had stellar progress and, as with Heather, the possibilities are there for them to achieve what they want, they just have to negotiate life first!

These three are but the tip of the iceberg, we have more athletes in the top 10, or threatening the top ten than I can ever remember.

There are certain bench marks by which athletes and parents, if not coaches, gauge ‘success’ making the ESAA finals is the highest profile of these, and with Kameron Duxbury, Cerys Thomas and Phoebe March doing just that, the club had a disproportionately large  representation in the throws disciplines. Heather won her ESAA final, Serena and Gaia were preparing for Commonwealth Games competition and ‘advised’ not to compete.

ESAA tends to dominate any youngsters ambition which means other young athletes performances go under the radar one such is Milly Cavanagh, who having won the ESAA shot put title a few short years back gained her England vest in javelin this year. Did anyone spot that?

Following hard on the heels of these young athletes we have some even younger athletes, Gabby Jones in the u13 is currently rewriting the club record books and could easily follow in her predecessors footsteps.

I’m doing a disservice to all our other throwers by not giving a name check at least, but there are so many of you!

Hopefully you’ll all come and watch these ‘possible’ stars of the future at our Throws Festival on 19th September at the Mountbatten Centre. Top ranked athletes from all corners of these islands will be there. Come and make a day of it and join in the BBQ.
