U17 Men T & F Team Vs Southern Athletics League - Hillingdon AC, N,Devon, Wycombe

Southern Athletics League, Saturday 16th April, Uxbridge

Fourth and last, disappointing but not disheartened. Last year we decided to put our long term faith in the large number of excellent u17 athletes we have coming through our ranks. This strategy would always carry a risk as it is this age group that witness the highest dropout rate in all sports across the board. We don’t claim t have discoverd the elixir of sporting life but the alternative is to take a pessimistic view of all sport and all youngsters. I have every reason to be optimistic we had a significant number of athletes missing for perfectly good reasons, injuries, exams, prom nights, illness, this will affect all clubs I know but it did hit us hard on this occasion. Shame as our ‘older’ athletes were in fine form our ever-green European masters competitors showed the way with some excellent points gathered with some equally excellent seasons bests.

What impressed me particularly was the enthusiasm of the u17 /20 athletes that were in attendance,14 in all, with two home matches to come that should work in our favour.

As for this first match it was a case of ‘if only’, it’s a game that we can all play after the event, athletes lost en route, athletes fouling out and not recording a distance, running u17s in 5k (sorry Lachlan, my fault there). So even with a far from representative team we could so easily have not just risen a place but won the match, there were only 28.5 points covering all four teams.
